New to Instagram? No worries! If you are a brand, influencer, or user that needs to convert an Instagram profile from a personal account to a business account, we’ve got you!

Will a Business Account Cost Me Money?!?

Absolutely not. Instagram will not charge you to convert your personal account to a business account. But what it does do, is allow you to pay for advertisements on Instagram and Facebook.

What are the other benefits? Look no further…

The Top 3 Perks of an Instagram Business Account

  1.  Call-To-Action Buttons

With an Instagram Business account,  you have access to CTA, or Call-To-Action, buttons at the top of your profile. You can add contact information for customers so they can call, email, or find directions to your business. They’ll be able to do this right from the app, which eliminates the need to search your website for contact information.

It does this both to make your life easier, and to keep you in-app. They don’t want you to leave! They do this so well, it’s probably why we’re all so addicted.

  2.  Analytics

Instagram now lets you find out who is viewing your profile. Finally!

Why is Instagram Analytics so awesome? Well, through analytics you can see:

    1. Your total amount of followers + how many followers you’ve gained over the last 7 days.
    2. Who is viewing your posts?
    3. Your total amount of posts + how many posts you’ve made over the last 7 days.
    4. How many impressions, reach, profile views and website clicks you have received over the last 7 days + what days did you have those impressions.
    5. What percentage of your followers are male or female.
    6. What is the age range of your followers?
    7. The top 5 cities and countries that visit your profile.
    8. What days and what time your followers are engaging with you.
    9. Who is viewing your stories?
    10. Who is viewing your promotions?

Instagram now lets you find out who is viewing your profile. Finally! With tools such as Jarvee VPS hosted on a Citrix Virtual Desktop, you can try automating your Instagram posts with accurate user insights and analytics.

Target Demographic on Instagram

This data is super important since it helps determine the demographic that’s attracted to your Instagram page and if they match your target demographic.

It also helps double check to see if you’re posting enough, or at the right times. All this data is aggregated into one place, with promotional data and campaign success outlined, too.

It’s all there.

Ad for Instagram Story
Instagram Story Ads allow you to “Swipe Up” and send viewers to an exterior landing page

3. Instagram Ads

Create promotions with Instagram Ads that will reach users inside of the platform. These promotions help brands or profiles get in front of the right people, at the right time. Ads can be run simultaneously on Facebook, giving you extra bang for your buck. This is possible since each Instagram account is also connected to Facebook Business Pages, and Facebook owns Instagram. It’s a no-brainer!

Instagram can also create audiences for you, or you can choose exactly who you want your target to be. Create an array of ads, just like Facebook, and get your brand noticed immediately!

Types of Ads:

  1. Photo
  2. Video
  3. Carousel- which is a series of pictures and/or videos
  4. Stories

How do I change my personal account to a business account?

  1. Go to your profile from the mobile app and tap Settings.
  2. Tap Account.
  3. At the bottom, tap Switch to Business Profile/Professional Account and select the Facebook Page you’d like to associate with your Business Profile on Instagram with.
  4. Make sure your profile is set to Public. Note: Private accounts can’t switch to Business Accounts.
  5. On the Set Up Your Business Profile page, review your business’s contact information, make any changes and tap Done.

Now you’re all set! Depending on how frequently you post, comment, like and engage with your audience, depends on how quickly your data is ready to view. Usually, you can see it over the next few days.

When I click to create a business profile it wants me to create a name. When I do it tells me that that name is already in use by Facebook. It is my page. I just want to link my existing Instagram to my new Facebook business page. How do I do this. I don’t receive any other options when I attempt to change to a business profile in Instagram.

Is there any way you can tell me how to change a business profile to a private account? Also there’s no option for “Business Profile” why is it so hard to fix this…. HELP

Hi Viv,

Instagram does not allow private Business Profile Accounts. Business accounts should be public facing for all visitors to freely learn about the business, therefore you would have to switch to a Personal Account to make it private. If you need further assistance, please contact us through this form –

Hello. I followed your steps to switch to a business account. However, when i tap the gear, there is no option for Business Account. The only options listed are: Change Password, Nametag, Authorized Apps, Notifications, Privacy and Security, Logout, and Cancel.

Has Instagram changed things since this article was written?

Hi Lisa,

Instagram makes many changes to their platform, but we’ve updated our post. You should find your Business Account switch under Account in the Settings.

under settings and accounts, it will say “get more tools”. Click that and it will allow you to change it into a business account.

Thank you for sharing. This is another way to access the Business Profile feature. Every Instagram Account is different, and this is just another variation of that.

I have the same issue, when I click the gear (settings), there is no option to switch to business account. Wondering if I have to have likes or if the account can’t be a brand new one?

Hello Lisa,

When you tap the gear icon for Settings, there should be an Account button. From there, you will choose the type of account you want to switch to.

Hi Twan,

That decision is completely up to you. If the old images do not align with the business, it’ll be best to archive or delete them. Hope this helps!

Hi Anthony,

Once you go into Settings, are you clicking the Account tab? If not, you will want to click that to find the account types. Did you just create your account?

Hi Rhoades,

Instagram Profile settings vary account to account. Make sure that once you go into Settings, that you are clicking Account. Under the Account, you will see these as the first three options: Saved, Close Friends, and Language. You should not see Edit Profile if you do, you are in the wrong spot.

Hope this helps!

Hi Angelic,

Not sure why it’s not showing the title you chose. Give it some time to update – if it doesn’t, contact Instagram Support. There isn’t much we can do to change Instagram’s platform. Thank you for reading and commenting!

I’m in the mobile ap and there is NO button for Account. When I click the gear, I get the following list: Edit Profile, Finad & Invite Friends, Posts You’ve Liked, Clear Search History, Log Out. That’s it. There is NO Account button anywhere in my mobile ap. And, of course, there’s no ability to do this from the desktop either. Why make it so difficult to manage?

I do have a problem changing a personal account that was a test to a business account. Went to ACCOUNT Before and I always get stuck on it wanting us to connect to Facebook which we are NOT on. Now I can’t even get there. My only option is to edit profile, the gear has completely gone. I believe Instagram keeps changing bc IG now represents 225 billion of FB business. It’s frustrating as it is our favorite social media but it appears almost impossible to talk to anybody at IG

Hello, I accidentally switched from public to personal way too many times and now it won’t let my account be a business profile. What do I do?

I switched my personal account on Instagram to my business account as directed above, and settings are public. However, my personal profile account, with photo remains on Instagram not my business logo or business info created on my business facebook page.

Hi Rhonda,

Your Facebook Page profile image and information will not automatically be applied to your Instagram account when it is made a Business Profile. To update your photo and business info, edit your Instagram profile as you normally would.

Hi Carlos,

Unfortunately, this is something you will need to contact Facebook directly for in order to resolve. It’s likely that the frequent changes to your account settings were flagged by their anti-spam systems, and there is no way to undo this without the help of Facebook Support.

Hi Michele,

What device are you using? If possible, try updating your app to the latest version. When you are on the profile tab, there should be a “hamburger menu” in the upper right corner. From there, you should be able to access your Settings, then your Account.

Hi Dawn,

It’s definitely frustrating how often they change their settings interface! Unfortunately, a valid Facebook Page is needed in order to convert an Instagram profile to a Business Profile. If you access your profile in the app, there should be a “hamburger menu” in the upper right corner. From there, click Settings, and then Account to make the switch to a Business Profile.

Hi Louise,

You are correct! After you create the Instagram account, connect the Facebook Business page to convert into a Business Instagram account. Thank you for commenting!

In order to switch to a business profile or business account in instagram.. you need to go to fb and have a business page or group.. it is easier if you are logged into instagram AND FACEBOOK on a computer.. then in settings in facebook somewhere it says “connect instagram account” .. it will then take you back to instagram to set up/switch to a business account.. the switch to business account option will not be there if you do not have a fb business page.. and that is easy to set up.

Hi. I’ve been trying to switch to a business account. The only options I see is switch to a professional account and it wants me to set up a labal but then nothing continues from there. It sends me a warning that I can’t run Facebook ads anymore, but that’s it. how do I switch to a business account? The option isn’t there. Please help.

Posted on December 3, 2020 at 4:19 pm

Hi Joanna,

Thank you for reaching out. If the business account option is not there, then there isn’t much you or we can do. Some key points are to make sure you are active on your account posting content and engaging with other accounts. The account also should not be new, but created at least 2-3 months from now so Instagram can establish that it’s a real account. Keep trying!

I figured it out. I set up an Instagram account and wanted to change it to a business account, but wasn’t given the option in settings. I had to go to my Facebook business page and under page settings, click one the Instagram link. It worked. Hope this helps anyone searching.
