SEO in 2018 will be another year of evolution, or in some cases, digital revolution. Digital marketers can expect to see some both new and accelerated trends when it comes to SEO. In this blog we’ve outlined the top 5 trends to look out for in the new year:

  • Voice Search
  • Featured Snippets & Featured Videos
  • Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)
  • Quality Backlinks
  • User Experience

Of course, great SEO in 2018 will require more hard work. The future of SEO is never set in stone and it’s important that we always expect there to be many other changes. It’s essential to stay on top of trends and re-evaluate your SEO strategy going into the new year.

The top 5 SEO trends to look out for in 2018 are…

#1 Voice Search

Voice search
Google reports that 1 in 5 searches comes via voice queries.

Voice search is very popular with products such as Amazon Echo or Google Home and to no one’s surprise, people like using voice search on their mobile phones too.

How does this affect SEO? With more people using voice search on their mobile device, it’s important to make sure that the mobile version of your website is completely updated.

It’s extremely important to make sure that certain resources are not blocked such as:

  • Images
  • CSS files &
  • Videos.

Also, keep in mind that voice search and text searches are very different. On-page SEO will need to be updated to optimize for voice search queries.

#2 Featured Snippets & Featured Videos

We are undoubtedly going to see Featured Snippets and Featured Videos continue to rise in importance. Digital Marketing and SEO, in particular, is becoming less about being in a Top 5 position in the SERP and more about being the trusted authority.

With limited space and increased competition, on-page SEO will now be made with snippets in mind. These snippets will alter the way pages are designed.

What’s a featured snippet anyway? A featured snippet is a summary of an answer to your search query. These are displayed on the top of Google’s search results and is extracted from the web page being served. It includes the page’s title, URL, and the summary helps you determine if the search result is really what you’re looking for.

#3 Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)

In 2018, Search Engines are more about making improvements for the end user. For SEO, site speed is critical for search engines and your page’s performance at the SERPs. By adding Accelerated Mobile Pages to your website it can make a page load up to four times faster than a standard mobile page.

Why is this important? For the same reason that #netneutrality is important, really. Websites that load faster are more likely to see more traffic than websites or web pages that load slowly.

According to Chartbeat, AMP load in a second and they also see a 35% improvement in engagement time. For SEO, pages that load faster improve quality and user experience and tend to rank higher.

#4 Building Quality Backlinks

Okay, this one isn’t entirely new. At least, it shouldn’t be! In 2018, building valuable backlinks will still be a critical factor for ranking in the SERPS. This is just one of the major ways that Google knows a website can be trusted. Quality should be used over quantity when backlinks are created. It’s better to have one link from a highly trusted website than it is to have multiple links from directories.

Another important factor to consider is backlinks that come from unassociated sites. Some competitors will create poor links from untrusted sites and send them to their competitors. They do this in hopes of penalizing their competitors and dropping their rank. Here at TM, we know how to disavow these links so that a website does not have rankings drop or penalized. If you suspect that this is happening to you, give us a call or drop us a line. We’ve got your back.Backlinks

#5 User Experience (UX)

User experience, in the context of SEO, will get even more attention in 2018. Google has always said that they strive to providing the search results people want, i.e. the results that users click and dwell on.

Focus on your SERP click rates and the amount of time that a visitor spends on a page and you’ll improve your rankings, traffic and conversions.

Overall, SEO in 2018 means more hard work. Since the future is never set in stone, it’s still important to keep on top of new SEO trends, important news, and of course- reevaluating your SEO strategy going into the new year.

How so? I can understand why, but I’m not exactly sure WHAT I should change to optimize a site for voice search. I don’t even know exactly how Google decides what text it’s going to use from a site for what it reads aloud for a voice search result.

Hey, Loved the article and pinning it to share. We are going to see more “knowledge-based trust” and the Google knowledge vault returning from Google, and the Semantic Web is going to make featured snippets and structured snippets more compelling and interesting to people doing marketing on the Web.

Yes, it’s true, building quality links isn’t a new thing in SEO but it is an important one!
Which is why I like that you included it in your post, Dwight, as I’m one of those people who constantly repeat that when it comes to content creation and backlinks quality should ALWAYS be used over quantity! :D

PS. btw I enjoyed reading the post!
