Well, month four of 2011 is in the books and just like last month, it’s time to find out what the top 10 Twitter topics were for April 2011. Any guesses right out the gate? Here at the TM Office in Royal Oak, MI, we have been plastered by the “April in the D” (‘D’ standing for Detroit for all you out-of-towners) promotions on Fox Sports Detroit. The promotion focuses on the Red Wings being in the playoffs and the Tigers starting out the 2011 MLB season. Also, the NBA playoffs started in April, so the beginning of the 2011 MLB season, NBA playoffs and NHL playoffs should have been huge topics on Twitter during April right?  Nope, I was wrong…well mostly wrong, but we’ll get to that later. So then what could the most popular topics be? Is the suspense killing you yet?

OK, enough tomfoolery from me, the number one Twitter topic of April 2011 is…the Royal Wedding!

Of course it was the Royal Wedding.  Why didn’t I guess that right way? The Royal Wedding had so much media coverage leading up to the event that it was pretty hard to ignore. This is probably why the wedding caused such a huge amount of Twitter buzz. Or, maybe people just really love weddings and people becoming princesses…who knows for sure?

According to an article by Todd Wasserman on mashable.com, “The event broke live streaming records…[dominating] Twitter conversations not only for a week, but for the whole month of April.”

As far as the rest of the list, there was nothing really unusual this month.  Of course, Justin Bieber was the number two topic, as he reached more than nine million followers on Twitter during the month of April.

Now, I was right about the NBA playoffs making the popular list as they came in fourth place as the most popular Twitter topic of April 2011. Soccer/Football made the list as third, but MLB baseball and the NHL playoffs did not make the top 10 list.

Look below for a complete list of the top 10 Twitter topics for April 2011:
