Doing Business Online

Everybody has a list of holiday gifts they think are fabulous. Not everybody gets to share them in a blog, so I thought I’d take advantage of the opportunity and add my own thoughts. Enjoy!

Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get your private information anyway. Or maybe you’re not paranoid. Either way, while a Federal report is calling for an online Bill or Rights to limit what information companies can store about you, they’re also allowing those very same companies the opportunity to write the codes of conduct they’ll be abiding by. Paranoid yet?

YouTube recently launched TrueView, which, despite the promise of skipping ads, still means you’re going to have to watch some of the ads. Fortunately, you may also one day have the opportunity to select which ad you watch before it plays. Either way, advertisers seem to really like the idea and it does give viewers some say. It’s a bit of a win-win situation.

Imagine back when we used to use pagers if our calling habits were analyzed by the paging company based on who we were calling, then they’d start sending us advertisements in the mail. Seems a little silly, doesn’t it? It’s a whole lot simpler these days for online advertisers to study our personal information and send specific ads our way. But what if that came to an end?

Website owners should be able to sell whatever they want on them, right? You may be surprised at the answer. The FCC just shut down 82 sites on Cyber Monday for businesses selling things they shouldn’t. Read and find out what.

When it comes to online content or a website, knowing that people are finding you, how they’re finding you and what they’re looking at is all important information. Google Analytics is an extremely useful tool in uncovering and digesting this very information.

Black Friday has become an after Thanksgiving tradition for many consumers. As many of you will flee to the stores at the crack of dawn hoping to get your hands on that hot item this year, some of us will be lying comfortably in our beds. Doesn’t the warmth of your blankets sound a lot better than standing in line fighting the frigid cold?
