Paid Text Links Business PR Strategy
DZ
Interesting enough more and more of the corporate world are becoming aware of effective link strategies. Point in case is a recent newspaper article in the Toledo Blade, an Ohio newspaper. The article talks about the importance of proper, personal online etiquette.
What you have posted on your FaceBook, MySpace and other online social networking accounts is viewable by all to see- including current and prospective employers.
What I find interesting is the openness of former Enron CEO Kenneth Lay’s approach of combating negative online search results in Google.
You see Lay chose the power of buying a power set of text links to what he wanted people to read. He just used his money to “sway” the truth a bit.
When “Enron scandal” was Googled, a paid link to “Enron information” appeared on the right-hand side of the page, and would direct traffic to www.kenlay.com, Lay’s personal Web site. Lay also purchased a number of back links with the anchor text ” Enron Scandal” at a few popular text link advertising brokers.
On his site the ousted executive then presented his version of the corporation’s financial scandal.
Such a strategy is cost-prohibitive for most, and even then, only works with combating negative information available on search engines.
So what about Facebook and MySpace profiles, where employers can freely visit? How does one safeguard an online profile?
Simple: keep anything that could hurt your image private. Anything you put online will leave a digital footprint.
Contrary to popular belief, those “footprints” don’t disappear — even when a Web site goes away.
